No real mystery. It's my graphics card and my power supply for my computer! They finally came today. I've already got them in and as I type this I'm installing Windows on it. (Poor Tux got wiped. :( I was starting to get used to linux, too.)
It's formatting my fairly large OS partition (About 130GB of the 160GB drive.). I left some space so I can put linux if I choose to in the future, but I'm not locked into installing it or not installing it.
I want to get linux back on \\Bob too. Since the HP recovery thingy wipes the drive completely and repartitions it, Tux got wiped out of \\Bob too.
I've finished Portal and both of the episodes of Half-Life 2 now. I haven't messed with Team Fortress 2, but I don't know what it's about anyways...
Valve has me hooked now. There are at least two games from Valve that do not yet exist that I want. I want the third episode of Half-Life 2, and then, it ever comes to be, I want the second edition of Portal. They are great games. A bit demanding from the performance viewpoint (maybe I should try the console versions?), but they are very well designed and often offer "commentary tracks" so that you can see what the developers have to say about specific points in the game.
Well, \\Kripto is demanding my attention. It just finished formatting. I'm excited to get it up and running finally. :)
Well, I was playing, or attempting to play, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and guess what happened.
Blue Screen of Death!
But this time it was the awesomest BSOD I've ever seen, It started blue, then it turned to blue with a white HP logo, black, and then black with light gray text which said something about HAL.DLL being missing or corrupt. Automatically it decided to restart the computer, and it corrupted parts of the filesystem! Yay!
This means that now I have to recover all my data through the linux partition I put on there (Thank you Tux!) and copy it to the hard drive from my new computer. (Only thing large enough for the job.)
So now I can go to bed and call it a night. My data is safe on the backup HDD. All I have to do is wait for my sister to back up her stuff, and get the system restore disks from my dad. That way, I can wipe the drive and start fresh.
How ironic that it happens to occur New Year's Eve, huh?
For those curious, my shipment from NewEgg (Graphics card, PSU) is due in on the third, the day I go back to school. I guess UPS takes New Year's Eve and New Year's off too. *shrug* I guess they do deserve it, huh? At least, as much as anyone else really does.
Well, I got my Half-Life 2: Episode 1 in tonight/this morning. The only place I can play it for now is the laptop. I guess it doesn't have a driver mess from having to different video cards swap in and out and probably doesn't have viruses lurking somewhere in the background. My dad was really good about avoiding viruses/spyware, but not my sister. Makes me glad I've built my own computer.
Anyways, it's a quarter past five in the morning, so I think I'm going to get to bed as soon as possible, even though I would have liked to have written something tonight, or even actually practiced piano. Ugh. I promised my teacher I would practice, so I really have to now. I just need to remember.
I'm very angry with the Source game engine, the base for almost every game I have on Steam. It decides that it doesn't want to work AT ALL. I think there might be something wrong with my "GCF" files (no idea what that stands for, but I'm guessing it means game cache file), so I'm trying every single thing it could be, using Steam's/Valve's directions.
I said a while ago that the best way to waste 10 minutes was to talk to an HP tech about docking stations for a four year-old laptop computer.
Now I have a better way to waste your time! Run the Windows System File Checker and complain to HP about how it's asking for an installation disc you couldn't possibly have! Yeah! There's nothing better than that! Having to type up three or four full error dialogs, explaining the problem in excruciating detail, and even sending a screenshot to the tech's supervisor! Great fun! All because there's some DLL or two broken somewhere that cause 3D games to malfunction. All in all, I spent about 45 minutes trying to explain the problem and get a solution of some sort or another. Unfortunately, the only "solution" they can support is a full system recovery via re-ghosting the drive. In the end, I used the discs I got for my new computer, and that didn't even work! Aggravation!
I kinda want to buy an airsoft gun. Not because I want to play the "game" (if that's what you call it), but more because I want it as a photographic subject. I tried very, very hard to get my hands in the right places to be holding one and photoshop the rifle in, but I just didn't have the patience to get it just right. If I had an airsoft rifle, that would have been easy... The only problems I have is money, and then my parents wonder "What the hell does he want an airsoft gun for?"
What kind of gift do you receive that you have to pay for?
One for yourself.
I finally got the stuff to get my PC up and running! The only things I'm missing right now is my graphics card and power supply. And guess what. They've just been ordered! Now within the next few days (I'm imagining Monday or Tuesday) I'll have the box in my hands. Then the only thing standing in my way of getting my system up and running is getting the new parts put in and the OS installed. (It's going to run Windows XP Media Center Edition.)
I'm excited.
And after that stuff comes, I get to send off for my first rebate check ever! I've bought things that had rebates, but usually my dad buys the stuff and I just pay the price after rebate, but this time I payed my dad the price in full when he ordered it online, so now I get the rebate check sent to me. Explosions!
Sorry about my random interjection there ("Explosions!"). For some reason, that translates roughly to "Excitement!".
Anyways, I'll list for you all what I got for christmas.
Windows XP
RIOT! - Paramore
Eye to the Telescope - KT Tunstall
Some CD of remixes or something like that...
Some little iPod radio thingy
Xbox Live Vision Kit
The Orange Box from Valve
The last one is my favorite, and for a good reason. It includes both episodes of Half-Life 2 that are available, which makes it worth the money in the first place. But then it comes with Portal, which is an interesting sort of puzzle game, I guess it really is. It's quite an intriguing game. You have to use portals to finish the "test" which ends with "cake". It's really very interesting, but the lady's voice that is supposed to be a computer or something is quite annoying. I can't but barely stand it...
Well, I want to play some more Portal, but my computer's being dumb. It's stuck in 1024x768 when it should be in 1280x1024... Time to restart! (Control panel won't fix it..)
I've done quite a lot in the past week, but first I want to go over a few things about school.
My Approximate Report Card:
1. Algebra II (Advanced) - A
2. Psychology - A+
3. Spanish IV - A-
4. Chemistry (Advanced) - B+
5. Java I - A-
6. English 11 (Advanced) - B
7. Cisco Networking Fundamentals - A+
I tried to get in with counseling about changing my schedule for the next semester, and the lady I spoke with claimed it was too late. Too late my ass. Whatever. So now I have a study hall I don't need. Ugh. I'd liked to have been able to put something I have to take, but whatever.
Now, other stuff. I got a Counter-Strike: Source server running on my local network now! Now I can play against bots with the "gun game" format or the regular gameplay type. Now I just have to go through the maps I put on the system and put their names in the maplist.txt thing so that the map vote thing can choose them. That doesn't sound like fun.
I want to use my camera for stuff now, but I have no idea what I'd be taking pictures of. There's just not much around here anymore...
Anyways, I've got to find something to do. I'm thinking about trying to write something, but I'm feeling awfully uninspired.
We get to go shopping for gifts this weekend. Ugh. I hate trying to shop for other people, especially my grandmother and my brother and his wife. They are very difficult to shop for because they all swear they don't need anything for christmas.... Yeah right...
I'm a bad wolfie. Every year I check out the gifts before they're wrapped. So I know a lot of things I'm getting already. Well, a few. I know that I got the "Orange Box" from Valve, as well as RIOT! by Paramore. Paramore is really an interesting group. :)
Anyways, we're getting up "early," so I'm going to get to bed. It's already after midnight!
It's been an annoying week so far. It's only wednesday...
I have to go to piano lessons tomorrow (Thursday). I really am not prepared. There's this one song that I was supposed to learn on my own, but I tried it once and never got around to it again. Man this sucks.
And we have a speaking EO in spanish too. I was supposed to write the entire dialog and send it to my partner via email. However, time has not allowed this. :( THIS REALLY SUCKS, because we're going first! FIRST! And we have nothing! Can you say SCREWED?
